Something as simple as a blanket is a household item that so many of us take for granted but for those in need, not having one or two could mean being left out in the cold this winter.

EFO Furniture Galleries is hoping to help prevent that with its Blanket Drive for the Needy, a 10th annual event co-sponsored by WNEP.

"With the tough economy there's going to be more people who are in need. They may be in their home and everything and might not be able to turn on their heat. So they need more blankets more than ever," said EFO Furniture Galleries CEO Joe Rinkunas Jr.

"It's very simple. All you have to do is bring in a blanket. Give it to us. Toss it in the box and you're done," said Gail Budziak of Blanket Drive for the Needy.

"When we get these blankets we pull them out, divide them up and give them to the charities in this area such as St. Frances of Assisi, Salvation Army," Rinkunas added.

Organizers said they not only need blankets but also sleeping bags not just for adults but also for children.

Youngsters are also getting involved in the blanket drive, including students from Our Lady of Peace School in the Clarks Summit area.

"It gives needy people warmth and not everybody has blankets," said student Jarret Rinkunas.

"I think it's pretty cool!" said student Ajna Prahalade.

The Blanket Drive for the Needy is now underway through November 29 at both EFO locations in Dunmore and Wilkes-Barre.
