Flooding creates problems in Schuylkill County

In Schuylkill Haven, the water has come up over the banks of the pond at Bubeck Park.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. — Rain has been falling steadily in Schuylkill County all day.

In Schuylkill Haven, the water has come up over the banks of the pond at Bubeck Park, but we’ve seen high water levels all over.

Heavy rains near Summit Station lead to flash flooding in the area.

Fair Road was closed as water from Bear Creek rushed across. It was a similar scene just down the road.

Water pouring down West Deer View Drive adding to the swell from Bear Creek.

"I have never seen it here on the roadway like this going right now. It’s been so fast it seems like," said William Wright, Auburn.

Wright was on his way to his house but was blocked by water no matter which way he went.

"I'm going over to my aunt's place. Over to the farm. Spend the night there," he said.

One woman decided she couldn’t wait, wading through the floodwaters to get to her home and her cat.

Floodwaters surrounded a home on Bear Creek Road near the fairgrounds entrance as the creek raged.

Greg and Danette Staffish bought the home about six months ago, in part because of its proximity to the water.

"We expected it and you know I mean we will take care of it, the damage that happened," said Greg Saffish of Exton.

The couple watched as the waters rose, filling the side yard and pressing up against the walls of the house.

"It’s a little unnerving, but that’s what insurance is for. You know what I mean. So you got to take the good with the bad," Greg added.

They’re adding some humor to an otherwise difficult situation.

"Do you know my barn is now a boathouse? I’m going to put a sign out, tubing rides five bucks," Greg joked.

In Schuylkill Haven, the banks of the pond at Bubeck park overflowed, closing Cleveland and South Berne Streets in the process.

One neighbor brought in gravel yesterday and built a wall to prevent flooding.

Now, they’re sweeping and pumping water out of their basement.
