Steve Lloyd
I'm beginning my 20th year with WNEP-TV 16 as the sports photographer/reporter/fill in anchor. My first efforts were behind the scenes editing, shooting, learning the ropes of the business. Along the way I spent six years in news and now continue my 14th year in the sports department. It's great to work alongside Jimmy Coles-the NY Yankee fan, and the Georgia Peach Sharla McBride-the University of Georgia graduate..it's a unique department.
Growing up in Lycoming County and attending Loyalsock Township High School I played some basketball, golf and ran cross country. The moment I remember most was getting a district medal at Hughesville in the District 4 track and field championships in 1986 placing fifth in the 800. I ran a personal best that day, in 2:08. My best time in the mile ever was 4:52.
After high school it was down to Kutztown University for four years of education. The opportunities were endless, interviewing Jerry Rice and Randall Cunningham in Allentown. I had the chance to meet marathon runner Bill Rodgers too. That was cool. In 2008 I interviewed Jumpin Johnny Wilson one of the Original Harlem Globtrotters who played back in the 1950's...Jumpin Johnny Wilson was 1946 Mr. Indiana basketball.
The real fun began in 1989 here in Moosic in the news department with trips to the Democratic National Convention in NYC, Woodstock in upstate NY, meeting presidents and first ladies of our country. In sports I've talked with Pete Rose, Bob Sura, Mario Lemieux, Derek Jeter and William "The Refrigerator" Perry.
I got married in June, 2002 to my beautiful wife, Amy. She is employed as a teacher (librarian) in the Scranton School District. We have our son, Zachary, (turns 5 in October 2009) On Christmas Eve of 2008 we had to put our dog Riley to sleep. She was a yellow lab and full of life, but kidney cancer slowed her down. She was only 7 years old. We miss her deeply.
Favorite sports moments covered include: (1) Joe Paterno breaking Bear Bryant's record; (2) The AHL 2001 Calder Cup Finals in Canada with the Penguins ; (3) Gerry McNamara hitting the game winning shot against Notre Dame in the Carrier Dome in front of 33,000 people (2002); (4) Brennan King of the Red Barons in 2006 hitting for the natural cycle and ending it with a grand slam on his last at bat-probably never see that live again in my life, and (5) covering the Governor's Cup 2008 championship in Durham, North Carolina-first title for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 20 seasons of minor league baseball.
